If you're setting up a cocktail bar, whether it's for a professional setting or at home, there are certain tools that you simply can't do without. These tools ensure you can create a wide variety of cocktails with precision and style. Let's take a look at the five essential tools for any cocktail bar and why they're indispensable.

1. Cocktail Shaker

A cocktail shaker is a must-have for any cocktail bar. It allows you to mix ingredients quickly and create chilled drinks with a touch of flair. There are two main types of shakers:

  • Boston Shaker: Comprising two parts—a metal tin and a glass or smaller metal cup. It’s versatile and is the choice of many professional bartenders.

  • Cobbler Shaker: A three-piece shaker with a built-in strainer and a cap. It’s generally easier for beginners to use and very popular in Japan.

Shakers are used to mix drinks that require a vigorous shake, which helps combine ingredients like fruit juices, cream, and egg whites into cocktails. This will the combine aeration creating a smooth and well-blended drink.

2. Jigger

The jigger is a small measuring cup that ensures you add the right amount of each ingredient to your cocktails. Jiggers often have two sides, allowing you to measure different quantities with one tool. Common sizes are 1 ounce on one side and 2 ounces on the other, but there are variations. Precise measurement is critical for balanced and consistent cocktails, making the jigger an essential part of your bar toolkit.

3. Muddler

A muddler is used to crush or "muddle" ingredients like herbs, fruit, or sugar cubes to release their flavors. It's essential for drinks like mojitos and caipirinhas. Muddlers come in various materials, including wood and stainless steel. When choosing a muddler, look for one with a comfortable grip and a sturdy construction to withstand pressure without breaking.

4. Hawthorne Strainer

The Hawthorne strainer is designed to fit over the top of a cocktail shaker to strain out ice and other solids when pouring cocktails into glasses. It has a coiled spring that adjusts to different shaker sizes and helps control the flow of liquid, ensuring you get a smooth pour without any unwanted chunks. This tool is especially useful when working with a Boston shaker.

Note: A fine mesh strainer can't replace a hawthorne strainer, but if you have a cobbler shaker sub out the hawthorne for a fine mesh strainer.

5. Bar Spoon

A bar spoon is a long, slender spoon with a twisted handle. It’s used for stirring cocktails, layering ingredients, and even measuring small quantities of liquids. The twisted design allows for smooth, consistent stirring, which is crucial when mixing drinks that need a gentle touch. The length of the bar spoon also makes it ideal for reaching into tall glasses or shakers.

With these five essential tools, you'll have the basic equipment needed to create a wide range of cocktails. Whether you're mixing classic drinks or experimenting with new recipes, these tools will help you craft drinks like a pro. So get your shaker, jigger, muddler, strainer, and bar spoon ready, and start mixing. We also list some great shops for cocktail gear below. Cheers!
